Tim Henman and Andy Murray lead by example

mjr - Saturday 22.09.07, 09:44am

The rain didn’t spoil the party yesterday, as Tim Henman built on Andy Murray’s win to give Great Britain a 2 - 0 lead against Croatia in their bid to win a Davis Cup World Group place in 2008.

Tim Henman beat Roko Karanusic 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. He may play again in the tie, and may even play in the doubles today, but yesterday’s effort might have been his last competitive singles match as a professional tennis player.

Tim Henman has been the crowd’s favourite as well as Britain’s No.1 tennis player for some years now, but after yesterday’s performance in front of his home fans at Wimbledon Andy Murray showed the kind of display that will endear him to British fans as Henman takes his final bow.

British crowds will take Andy Murray to their collective bosom as firmly as they have Tim Henman down the years. The process will be markedly hastened by performances the like of which the 20-year-old produced in Great Britain’s cause yesterday.

Murray needed to be on top of his game to beat Marin Cilic 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
