The USA defeated Russia in straight sets to win the Davis Cup tennis championship in Portland, Oregon, USA. Surprisingly, it is the first time the United States have won the Davis Cup since 1995.
Bob and Mike Bryan beat Nikolay Davydenko and Igor Andreev 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, 6-2 to give the USA a 3-0 lead in the best-of-five series.
That followed singles victories by US No. 1 Andy Roddick and James Blake on Friday, when Roddick beat Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 and Blake’s victory over Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 7-6 (7/4), 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/3).
The USA team was captained by the John McEnroe’s youngest brother, Patrick McEnroe.
